#158 Abrasion Resistance Testing Methods of Platings - 3

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

The following method is used for plating abrasion resistance testing.

(5) Rotating plate abrasion test (Taber's abrasion resistance test)

This is a method of examining abrasion resistance of platings by using a device shown in [Fig.4], where a test specimen is mounted on a horizontally rotating disc and a load is applied on a pair of abrasive paper pasted abrasion wheels and the test specimen.

●Abrasive paper

Abrasive paper CC as defined in JIS R6252 or WA #240~#600 is to be used.

●Test specimen

A 120mm diameter circular disc is to be the standard. A 6mm diameter hole is bored in the center.

●Determination by change in the mass

Calculated with the following formula.

WR=N/(w1-w2)
 Where
 WR: Abrasion resistance (DS/mg)
 w1: Weight of test specimen before the test (mg)
 w2: Weight of test specimen after the test (mg)
 N: Number of test rotations (Times)

[Fig.4]

As discussed so far, there are following abrasion resistance testing methods: 1. Sand-falling abrasion resistance test, 2.Spray abrasion resistance test, 3. Reciprocation motion abrasion resistance test, Rotating plate abrasion resistance test (Taber's abrasion resistance test), and 5. Twin disc drive abrasion tester (Amsler type abrasion testing). As to which testing method is to be used will be determined by the involved parties.

The following method is employed for abrasion resistance testing.

(3) Reciprocating motion abrasion resistance testing

This is an abrasion resistance testing method by using a device as shown in [Fig.3] where rubbing by reciprocating motion is applied between the contact loaded test specimen and abrasive paper pasted wheel.

●Abrasive paper
Abrasive paper CC as defined in JIS R6252 or WA #240~#600 is to be used.

●Test specimen
80mm×80mm flat plate as standard.

●Determine by the following formula based on changes in mass or plating thickness.

WR=N/(w1-w2)or WR=N/(t1-t2)
 Where
 WR: Abrasion resistance (DS/mg) or (DS/ μm)
 w1: Weight of test specimen before the test (mg)
 w2: Weight of test specimen after the test (mg)
 t1: Thickness of test specimen before the test (μm)
 t2: Thickness of test specimen after the test (μm)
 N: Number of reciprocation (DS value)

(4) Twin disc drive abrasion tester (Amsler type abrasion testing)

This is a test method to examine abrasion resistance of platings by applying loads on the test specimen and rubbing wheels with 10% slip ratio in either dry or wet conditions, and applying rolling or sliding friction using a device shown in [Fig.5]

●Test specimen

O.D. 40mm, I.D. 16mm, Thickness 10mm

●Abrasion wheel

The material is selected based on product usage environment.

●Determine based on mass or thickness changes.

Calculated with the following formula.

WR=N/(w1-w2) or WR=N/(t1-t2)
 Where
 WR:Abrasion resistance(Times/mg)(Times/μm)
 w1: Mass of test specimen before the test (mg)
 w2: Mass of test specimen after the test (mg)
 t1: Thickness of test plating before the test (μm)
 t2: Thickness of test plating after the test (μm)
 N: Number of abrasion wheel rotations (Times)
