#058 Concept of Reducing Mechanical Elements - 2

Concept of Reducing Mechanical Elements - 2 is explained.

(1) Designing with Integrated Functionalities

The following design thoughts and proceedings are the key.

Designing points for Integrating Multiple Functionalities

(1) Giving multiple functions to one mechanical element
Design Points (Hints)

a) Integrated Functionalities concept is often used in mass produced consumer products such as home appliances. Why not give a second look with interests. (See [Fig.1])

[Fig.1] Example of Integrated Functionality Design

b) Bolted-together Design >> One Piece Cast Design >> Logical cost reduction with the functionality retained, as One Piece Welded Design (See [Fig.2])

[Fig.2] Equivalent Functionality (Strength) Design and Mechanical Element Reduction

(2) Integrating multiple mechanical elements by insert molding using injection molding techniques.
Design Points (Hints)

a) Require the use of standardized products for design processes
Ex. *MISUMI FA Mechanical Standard Components: Levers, Handles, Knobs, etc.

(3) Making the equipment adoptable to handle a wider variety by the use of programmable controls
Design Points (Hints)

a) By the use of programmable controls, LCA units themselves and drive/control components (cams, etc.) can be reduced.
